Bitcoin was released after the 2008 financial crisis. The underlying structure of the digital currency is attributed to one Satoshi Nakamoto, whose identity remains unknown -- in fact, it’s even unclear whether this name refers to an individual or a group of people. Although we don’t know his identity, we do know what he has done. Nakamoto created the Bitcoin Protocol in 2008 and shared it with the world in the form of a message. Later, in 2009 he released the first version of the Bitcoin software client, which he has developed further with a team that formed in the meantime. Since then, Nakamoto has slowly faded from public awareness. His last sign of life is a 2011 message in which he states that he has “moved on to other things,” but this decision does not affect the Bitcoin network’s operation thanks to its decentralized structure.
